From Fighter Pilot to Franchise Owner: Continuing a Life of Service with BrightStar Care

Dwayne Booker

What happens when years of military leadership, clinical expertise, and operational experience converge around a lifelong commitment to service? For Dwayne Booker and his family, the answer was home care with BrightStar Care.

A Military Foundation Built on Service

After 12 years of active duty service, leading and working under pressure became a daily practice for Dwayne. As a fighter pilot, he operated in high-stakes environments that shaped his approach to teamwork and accountability.

When he transitioned into the reserves, he continued flying as a commercial airline pilot at Delta. However, aviation was not the only arena where he applied his military training. Dwayne also stepped into a new chapter as a business consultant, translating fighter pilot frameworks into business strategy for Fortune 500 companies.

“I took what we learned as fighter pilots and applied it to business,” Dwayne said, “from planning campaigns and developing strategy to really nailing down communication in big organizations.”

Over time, Dwayne began to recognize that the leadership training he had developed as a military officer could translate naturally into entrepreneurship.

Where the Family’s Venn Diagram Aligned

Service runs deep in the Booker family. His father served in the Marine Corps, his brother served in the Air Force, and his cousins have served in the Navy and Army. His wife, Brittany, is a Certified Nurse Practitioner whose career spans pediatrics, oncology, hematology, and care for active-duty service members and retirees. His sister, Duanesha, built her career as a regional director for a rehabilitation center.

When they mapped out their backgrounds, the intersection was clear: “When we put the Venn diagram together between me, my wife, and my sister, we realized we wanted something service-oriented,” Dwayne explained. “We’re a military family, so we asked ourselves how we could create a real impact in our community. That’s when we landed on home care.”

That blend of leadership, operations, and clinical expertise formed what Dwayne calls their trifecta. He leads sales and marketing, his sister oversees operations, and his wife guides clinical standards and patient care as the Director of Nursing.

Why Choose BrightStar Care

Veterans are accustomed to operating within defined systems, and that structure was one of the factors that led Dwayne, Brittany, and Duanesha to choose BrightStar Care.

“I love the fact that they have their framework,” Dwayne added. “You want to remove as many unknowns as possible. How do I tackle marketing and sales? How do I run a team? How do I onboard an employee? They take all that uncertainty out and give you a framework for it.”

Equally important has been the culture within the franchise network. Dwayne connected with other owners who openly shared lessons learned and best practices. The collaborative environment reminded him of the military’s wingman mentality, where collective strength enhances everyone’s performance.

Additionally, Dwayne notes the importance of the flexibility that the BrightStar Care business model offers. “The multiple revenue streams like skilled nursing, a lot of competitors didn’t offer that when we were researching,” he shares. “My wife, being a nurse practitioner, understands just how important offering the full continuum of care is. It bridges a gap and creates total wellness, which allows us to provide something really valuable to the community.”

Continuing the Mission

For Dwayne and his family, BrightStar Care represents a continuation of a lifelong mission to serve others while building something stable in the community they call home. The uniform may have changed, but the commitment to discipline, integrity, and accountability remains the same.
